Specialized Perinatal Psychiatry Services Now Offered for Women
The Family Center at O’Donovan, part of Our Lady of the Lake Physician Group, is now offering perinatal psychiatry services for women who are struggling with mood and anxiety issues. The clinic provides mental health care for women who are pregnant, postpartum or who may be considering pregnancies in their future.
“Pregnancy and having a new baby affects women profoundly and in many different ways, and these effects can last for a year or more after the birth of a baby,” said Dr. Eva Mathews, psychiatrist with Our Lady of the Lake Physician Group and assistant clinical professor of psychiatry with the LSU Health Sciences Center Department of Psychiatry.
Babies born to mothers with untreated depression have been shown to be more likely to have low birth weight, premature birth and are at a higher risk to need care in a neonatal intensive care unit. New mothers can also be causing themselves and their families more harm by not seeking support.
Dr. Mathews is one of the only doctors currently offering this highly specialized service in the Baton Rouge area. She received training in perinatal psychiatry at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. She received her bachelor’s degree from LSU, and her medical degrees and a Masters in Public Health from Tulane University School of Medicine and School of Public Health, respectively. Dr. Mathews is also engaged in teaching perinatal psychiatry to psychiatric residents.
