Bill Helmke, MD is now offering the TAVR procedure in Baton Rouge, LA
Patients with a common heart problem now have an option to live extended, healthier lives with a new heart valve. The minimally-invasive heart procedure called the transcatheter aortic valve replacement or TAVR is used to replace a narrow or diseased valve in the heart without requiring major open heart surgery.
Narrow or diseased heart valves restrict blood flow which begins with symptoms of chest pain or shortness of breath and can lead quickly to heart failure and be life threatening. Up to 1.5 million people in the United States suffer from aortic stenosis and have symptoms that can restrict normal day-to-day activities such as walking short distances or climbing stairs.
“A damaged valve is a common heart problem that can be very serious and our cardiovascular teams are dedicated to helping these patients to improve outcomes,” said Dr. Bill Helmke, cardiologist with Our Lady of the Lake Heart & Vascular Institute. “Replacing the aortic valve is an effective treatment and it is a great benefit to our community to have this minimally invasive technique as an alternative to open heart surgery. We are seeing patients live longer and healthier lives with the TAVR.”
The TAVR is provided by a specially trained team at Our Lady of the Lake Heart & Vascular Institute and involves placing a new valve into the damaged valve all while the heart is still beating.
Patients who do not receive an aortic valve replacement have no effective, long-term treatment option to prevent or delay their disease progression. Without treatment, severe symptomatic aortic stenosis is life-threatening – studies indicate that 50 percent of patients will not survive more than an average of two years after the onset of symptoms.
