Surgical Oncology Team
John Lyons, MD is a board certified general surgeon who has completed additional training in advanced surgical oncology.
Dr. Lyons grew up in New Orleans and completed his general surgery residency within the Louisiana State University Charity Hospital system. Following residency, Dr. Lyons pursued additional training in a prestigious fellowship with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center and the largest private cancer center in the world. After fellowship training, Dr. Lyons returned to Louisiana to help improve cancer care in his home state. According to the national program of cancer registries, Louisiana has a higher cancer death rate compared to the national average for many different types of cancers.
Dr. Lyons is the current chair of the Our Lady of the Lake-Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center's skin and soft tissue cancer multidisciplinary treatment team. In this role, he coordinates with other cancer specialists working to improve practices and treatment for skin and soft tissue malignancies by enhancing patient education and local participation in national clinical trials. Dr. Lyons is active in many local, state and national surgical and oncology professional societies, and has published several research manuscripts in peer-reviewed medical journals.
